I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Ferguson household tonight.... If Villa won't move out of Spain, Benzema has gone to Real and Ribery looks over-priced, where do United turn?
Luis Fabiano caught the eye in the Confederations Cup, Eto'o looks like he will stay at Barcelona, Pato seems to be staying at Milan. Ibrahimovic is probably an ego too far and, potentially, too disruptive for Fergie. Aguero is an astonishing talent and maybe Fergie will turn his eyes to him. Alternatively, Real Madrid have plenty of talent who will be looking around the continent.... Saviola, Higuain, Robben and so on.
Valencia isn't a bad player but he isn't going to fill the gap in goals that Ronaldo and (to a much lesser extent) Tevez leave behind them. Rooney, for all his many talents, isn't a thirty goal a season man (or, some would say, a twenty goal a season man). United need a proven striker and fairly quickly.

Rob,
One thing to consider re Valencia: obviously, everyone realises that he is far less prolific a goalscorer than Ronaldo. However, he is far less profligate as well: CR would more often than not take the shot himself when there could be any number of players in better positions and for every screamer of a goal, there's a hatful of missed chances that Rooney or another could have picked up had Ronaldo thought to pass the thing.
Valencia is an incredibly creative midfielder, capable of opening up defences, but ultimately, other players would benefit from that creativity, when he spotted them in a far more productive position.
Obviously, AV has some big shoes to fill and United fans looking for the next Ronaldo will be disapoointed. But whoever they get upfront for the remaining £63million, they'll get excellent service from the midfield, and i daresay that United will have (or find) someone better able to capitalise on Valencia's supply than our players were.

That's probably true to an extent, Will. Ronaldo did score a hell of a lot and wasn't far down the assists list. Factor in United's main assister last season was Giggs, and presumably he'll play even less next season, and they have some problems.
Who can they buy? Owen is now evens to go to United.... there aren't that many strikers that they can buy. Huntelaar would be my bet as he has slipped down the order somewhat.
