The Golden Dustbin

An interesting piece over at Soccernet here (previous winners here). I've highlighted my problems with Huntelaar before (he's too slow)*. It seems to be an award not for the worst player but for the most disappointing one. If so, who would win it in England?

*I should say, for accuracy, I've long been a fan of Quaresma (and Rivaldo - that award is a travesty for, arguably, the best player since Maradona)

If you're talking players in the English League (though not necessarily English), I'd have to nominate Kevin Kilbane: when he was at Wigan he promised so little, yet still failed to deliver.

If you're talking about English players, it surely has to be David James. An experienced keeper, with a good pedigree, and yet almost perpetually in orbit of Planet Howler...

Well, for the Premier League, it would have to be Shevchenko, surely? A crushing disappointment to all of us, even those who don't care for Chelsea.

Among current English players (if you could persuade Lee Sharpe to hand back the trophy), perhaps a James Beattie or (whisper it) a Robbie Fowler...

Fowler, at Leeds, certainly would have been a decent shout - he scored a shedload of goals for Liverpool and did well in his first year at Leeds (12 in 23).

Shevchenko, Bogarde, Berbatov...

I'd agree with Mr. E & say Sheva, but go back a little & look at Mutu, promised so much but his stint ended in so much acrimony.

Others that spring to mind: Brolin, Asprilla, Hartson (at Wimbledon) Jeffers.....
